Workshop Title: Google Docs: Presentations for Writing, Collaboration, and Publishing


Day: 2


Subject of the Day's Workshop:

To increase knowledge and application of Google Docs: Presentations so that participants can create lessons and learning experiences for student use within the middle school English Language Arts classroom.

Prerequisite Knowledge:

  1. Basic knowledge of Google Docs: Presentations.

Content:

Presentations allow students and teachers to transmit information such as instruction or to provide information about curricular topics within the classroom. Google Docs: Presentations, however, enable students to engage collaboration inside and outside of the classroom. In addition, teachers can utilize Google Docs Presentations to engage in revising and editing sessions to monitor student work and progression. Today's workshop will entail reviewing various operations and functions within Google Docs: Presentations in addition to examining how the Google Docs suite can be utilized as an organizational tool for teacher and student use. Participants will collaboratively work through interactive activities to showcase the benefits of integrating Google Docs: Presentations into the classroom. Finally, participants will be given some planning time to create a Google Docs: Presentations lesson for use within the classroom in addition to completing the self and professional development evaluation.

Objectives of the Lesson:

By the end of Day 2, participants will be able to:
  1. Possess a larger understanding of the various operations within Google Docs: Presentations.
  2. Recognize, understand, and apply various ways that Google Docs: Presentations can be utilized in the middle school English Language Arts classroom.
  3. Transform teaching practices through the use of Google Docs: Presentations focusing on format and types of presentations, interactivity, revising and editing, collaboration, and sharing.
  4. Create and develop activities that utilize Google Docs within the middle school English Language Arts classroom.
  5. Engage in self evaluation and workshop evaluation.

Lesson Format:

  1. Brief question and answer session to address lingering questions from participants regarding information from Day 1.
  2. Housekeeping: Organization of documents. Folder set up with color coding. Review collections and sharing of folders. Examination of how Google Docs suite can be utilized as an organizational tool for teachers and students.
  3. Quick Review using LCD: Various functions within Google Docs such as tool bars, revision history, sharing, comments, and comment preferences
  4. Collaborative Activity: Groups will work to create a presentation that involves the examination of using presentations in the middle school English Language Arts classroom. Some sample topics of examination include but are not limited to the following: Why use presentations? What is the most common type of presentation utilized in the classroom? What do we expect students to do with presentations? Should presentations not only present information but also incorporate an interactive framework? Once completed, groups will share presentations with other groups (this will lead into the next activity).
  5. Collaborative Activity: To continue working with the idea of virtual collaboration and revising and editing through Google Docs, groups will examine another group's presentation. While viewing, groups will create comments and engage in the revising and editing process. Once complete, groups will share presentation with facilitator, who will present each group's presentation on the LCD. Discussion of how engaging in virtual writing conferences will strengthen students' abilities to become increasingly proficient writers and composers of presentations.
  6. Collaborative Activity: Groups will be provided with a content standard utilized within the middle school English Language Arts classroom. Groups will design a presentation that is interactive that focused on achieving and meeting that standard. Groups will present and share presentation with other groups. Examination of types of presentations will be provided by facilitator.
  7. Planning time: Participants will be able to develop and create a Google Doc: Presentation activity based upon current classroom topics that will be implemented in the classroom for student use (must be a collaborative activity). Facilitator will be able to meet individually with participants during this time to aid in development or answer questions.
  8. Self and Workshop Day Evaluation.
